Cumine Court

A 1,682-square-foot flat at Cumine Court in Fortress Hill on Hong Kong Island, an interior design and build for two serious collectors, planned around more than eighty pieces of Chinese art and furniture.

The owners have a deep love of Chinese culture and art, and over the years have gathered more than eighty pieces, from the early 1900s right through to contemporary work. Renovating their forty-year-old flat, they wanted a home that could hold and show that collection properly, so our first job was less decoration than curation: where does each piece live, and what does it sit against.

We treated the long walls like a gallery, keeping them white and clear so the larger paintings could hang with room to breathe. Above the sofa, a delicate panel of Manchurian window lattice is set into an ornate wooden frame, and it becomes the quiet centrepiece of the living room, an antique given the attention it deserves rather than lost among the furniture.

In the bedroom we picked up the cheongsam as a theme, choosing embroidered flower-and-bird motifs for the wallpaper and the bedding, so the room carries a soft, feminine calm. The framing, the joinery, and the display pieces were custom-made for the flat by our trusted partner factory. It is residential interior design as a backdrop for a life's collecting: a Fortress Hill home that is part residence, part private gallery.

Our first job was less decoration than curation.
