The Riverpark

A 1,227-square-foot flat at The Riverpark in Tai Wai, a brand-new unit where the family wanted us to focus on the finish rather than tear up the plan.

Because the apartment was new, the owners only wanted light enhancement to the interiors, so most of our work here was about light and detail. The main corridor barely got any daylight, so we turned part of one bedroom wall into glass and let the living-room light carry through into the passage. Small move, big difference to how the whole flat feels when you walk in.

This is a home built around the family's daily rhythm. The couple often had grandmother to stay, and their teenage daughter practised piano for hours, so we gave the keyboard a room of its own. We raised the floor and cut an eye-level opening in the wall facing the living room, so she could practise without feeling shut away from everyone. Because that room became the piano room and study, we set grandmother's guest bed into the daughter's bedroom as a bunk, with a staircase of long, low treads so an older guest can climb up safely.

The owners valued the decorating side of our work most, so the detail is where this one sings. We wrapped the white cabinets and the study's glass wall in black borders to draw out the vertical lines, then hung long horizontal pendants to answer them. The daughter's room got a brighter scheme, baby blue and white behind a playful patchwork quilt, and we spread the lighting across many small points so the family can dial the mood up or down at will. Considered interior design, less about moving walls than getting every line right.
