Peak One

Everything in this interior design started from the children. The job was to hold a balance between spoiling them a little, keeping the place practical, and still letting it look good, all of it really an expression of how much the parents love them. Love begins in the living room: the room next door had its partition walls taken down and became a playful games room, with a trendy shelving unit, a sofa, and a sliding door printed with birds standing in as the divider. We leaned on white space and natural materials to mark out the different zones and keep the sightlines open right across the flat.

The study was rethought too. We removed the room and the en-suite that sat beside the master bedroom, and replaced the corridor wall with a piano and a run of storage, which made the whole area more practical and more flexible. Behind the writing desk, an L-shaped display cupboard with shine-through lighting holds the family's favourite toys and figures, a kind of treasure trove. When the parents are worn out after work, a few minutes with the collection brings back the better parts of being a kid.

The scheme circles back to where it began, the living room, and carries the look through. Different colours mark out the dining area, painted in a white-to-khaki gradient that warms it up, so the living room, dining room, and entry each read clearly through their own palette.
