This was a guest house where the owner would host their friends from overseas.
We knocked down the two rooms in the original layout to form a studio to accommodate the varying number of guests who might be staying here.
Since customizing to each visitor’s taste and lifestyle was not possible, a practical and durable design was key.
Visitors would unlikely cook much, so we reduced the cooking space to a kitchenette and instead enlarged the bathroom. We selected versatile furniture pieces, e.g. one double bed and one sofa bed to sleep a maximum of four people in the apartment.
Though the brief lended itself easily to a generic service apartment design, the owner wanted to ensure a sense of home for the visitors.
Colours and decorative accessories were selected for their warmth and comfort. Maintaining openable windows to allow fresh air was a welcomed change to Hong Kong’s constantly air-conditioned indoors.
